What Memorial Day means to me…

This is a day to remember.  Remember those who have  and are serving our country, for without their service our children could be experiencing a completely different life.  It is a day to remember loved ones who are no longer with us.   My mother-in-law has not been with us for 9 years, but I can still hear her laugh, feel her embrace, and remember the lessons that were on the tip of her tongue.  “Waste not want not”, “I’ve got a good memory, but it is short”, and “Have faith” to name a few.  To honor her on Memorial Day we tie messages to a helium balloon and release it from the end of the dock at our cabin.  It is a quiet and emotional time watching the balloon as it rises.

What will you do to honor your loved ones this Memorial Monday?  The easiest and best way is to tell stories.  Telling stories brings us to a place of celebration; it gives loved ones a presence in our hearts, and continues purposeful teaching.  Our children learn so much from stories, while enabling a connection with their ancestors.  Take time to tell a story.
